By now most of us are familiar with IVF-ET. For others who may not know, it stands for “in vitro fertilization” and embryo transfer (IVF/ET)is also commonly known as assisted reproductive technology (ART). It is the process by which a child is created outside the body of the mother and then transferred back in the uterus.
This technology is one the best remedies to infertility and has been in use for over three decades.
Recently it is becoming popular in India. Naturally, there are a lot of questions surrounding IVF. We hope that this post will be able to clear some— if not all — of your doubts about this topic.
Why IVF?
- IVF is used to treat infertility among the following:
- Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Male infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility
- Women with ovulation disorders
- Women who have had their fallopian tubes removed
- Individuals with a genetic disorder that inhibits pregnancy/fertility
- Any other unexplained infertility
How is IVF performed?
There are some basic steps to perform IVF-ET.
- Stimulate and monitor the growth of healthy eggs in the ovaries.
- Collection of the eggs.
- Process the semen for good sperms.
- Combine the eggs &the sperm in the laboratory for fertilization and provide the required atmosphere for the development of early embryo.
- Transfer the embryos back into the womb.
Major myths about IVF:
- It is not the same as natural pregnancy: IVF only differs from natural pregnancy in the “fertilization” part. The eggs from the mother are fertilized in a lab. The resultant embryos are then transferred to the uterus to initiate a pregnancy. Once that happens, there’s nothing to distinguish between embryos fertilized in the body or in a laboratory.
- IVF babies are not as healthy as normal babies: This is one of the biggest misconceptions out there. The health of a baby at birth depends greatly on the type of diet and care the mother receives during her pregnancy. Besides, once the embryo is transferred to the uterus, the pregnancy follows a natural process. There’s no reason to think that the baby’s health will be negatively impacted by IVF.
- There are fewer chances of a successful pregnancy with IVF: Yet another false claim. In my experience, I have seen that there’s a higher chance of pregnancy with IVF! In fact, we’ve delivered several twins and triplets as well over the years.
What are the side effects of IVF?
Some side effects after IVF may include:
- After the procedure, passing a small amount of fluid.
- Mild cramping
- Mild bloating
- Constipation
- Breast tenderness
- Although women are advised to take it easy after the procedure, they can resume normal activity within a few days.
