How are Human Embryos Thawed and Used at IVF Labs?

The process of thawing an embryo involves removing the individual blastocyst from liquid nitrogen and replacing the cryoprotectant with water. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes during which the embryos frozen at -196 deg Celsius are brought to room temperature.

Subsequently, 3 to 4 hours are required for the embryos to expand to their original size and shape, after which they are ready to be transferred.
This is a critical process and requires expert handling by a well-trained team led by the embryologist.

The doctor will undertake a baseline check of your uterine lining at the start of the cycle and check it again a few days before transfer to ensure it is in optimum condition. The actual embryo transfer procedure on the day then replicates a fresh transfer and generally does not require sedation or medication. However, some women may require to have this done under sedation or anesthesia.
