How are Human Embryos Thawed and Used at IVF Labs?

The process of thawing an embryo involves removing the individual blastocyst from liquid nitrogen and replacing the cryoprotectant with water. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes during which the embryos frozen at -196 deg Celsius are brought to room temperature.

Subsequently, 3 to 4 hours are required for the embryos to expand to their original size and shape, after which they are ready to be transferred.
