IVF Success Rates in Delhi: What the Numbers Actually Mean

IVF Success Rates in Delhi: An Honest Answer

When you are considering IVF, one of the most important things you want to know is: what are the chances this will actually work?

It is the right question to ask. It is also the question that gets answered dishonestly far too often. Some clinics quote inflated numbers. Others use statistics that sound impressive but do not reflect your specific situation at all.

At Delhi IVF and Fertility Research Centre, we have been helping couples since 1993. Over 25,000 families have had babies through our care. That experience has taught us one thing clearly: the couples who go through IVF with realistic, well-understood expectations handle the process better, make better decisions, and ultimately have better outcomes.

This page gives you the honest picture.

Improve Your IVF Success Rates with Advanced Genetic Testing

Many failed IVF cycles and recurrent miscarriages are linked to hidden chromosomal abnormalities that cannot be detected through standard IVF alone. Advanced PGT-A genetic screening at Delhi IVF and Fertility Research Centre helps identify genetically healthy embryos, improving implantation success while reducing miscarriage risk.

What is the IVF Success Rate in Delhi?

IVF success rates in Delhi, at quality clinics, generally fall in the following ranges per cycle:

Age Group Success Rate Per Cycle
Women under 3540% to 50%
Women aged 35 to 3730% to 40%
Women aged 38 to 4020% to 30%
Women over 4010% to 20%

These figures reflect clinical pregnancy rates per fresh IVF cycle. They are consistent with national data from leading Indian fertility centres and broadly align with international benchmarks from the UK's HFEA and the US CDC.

The most important word in that table is "per cycle." A 40% success rate does not mean 40% of couples never conceive. It means that in any single cycle, approximately 40 out of 100 attempts result in a confirmed pregnancy. Many couples who do not succeed in the first cycle go on to have babies in subsequent attempts.

What Does "IVF Success" Actually Mean?

This matters more than most people realise, because different clinics measure success differently.

Positive pregnancy test (beta-hCG positive): A blood test confirms the hormone is present. This is the earliest indicator, but it does not mean a baby is guaranteed.

Clinical pregnancy: A heartbeat is confirmed on ultrasound at around six to seven weeks. This is the more meaningful benchmark.

Live birth rate: A healthy baby is delivered. This is the number that genuinely matters to you and your family, and it is lower than the clinical pregnancy rate because it accounts for miscarriages and complications.

When comparing clinics, always ask which definition they are using. A clinic quoting a 60% "pregnancy rate" may be counting positive blood tests, not live births. At Delhi IVF, when we discuss your chances, we are talking about outcomes that lead to a baby in your arms.

What Factors Affect Your IVF Success Rate?

No two patients are the same. Your personal success rate depends on a combination of factors, and understanding them helps you make informed decisions about your treatment.

Age

Age is the single most important factor in IVF outcomes. It is not about fitness or general health. It is specifically about egg quality. As women get older, the chromosomal quality of eggs declines naturally. This affects fertilisation rates, embryo development, and implantation.

This is why a 32-year-old and a 41-year-old with identical diagnoses may have very different outcomes. It is also why early consultation matters. If you have been trying without success for more than 12 months and are over 35, an earlier investigation gives you more options.

Embryo Quality

Not all embryos are equal. A high-grade blastocyst (Day 5 embryo) has a significantly better chance of implanting successfully than a Day 3 embryo. At Delhi IVF, our embryology team grades every embryo carefully and selects the one most likely to result in a healthy pregnancy.

Embryo quality depends on both egg quality and sperm quality. Both matter.

Ovarian Reserve

Your ovarian reserve, measured by AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) levels and antral follicle count on ultrasound, tells your doctor how many eggs are available and how your ovaries are likely to respond to stimulation. A lower reserve means fewer eggs retrieved, which means fewer embryos to select from. This does not make IVF impossible, but it does affect strategy and realistic expectations.

Uterine Health

Even a perfect embryo will not implant in an unhealthy uterine environment. Conditions like fibroids, polyps, a thin endometrial lining, or uterine adhesions can all reduce success rates. At Delhi IVF, uterine evaluation is part of your initial assessment so any issues can be identified and addressed before the embryo transfer takes place.

Sperm Quality

Sperm quality affects fertilisation rates and embryo quality. Severely abnormal sperm parameters increase the risk of fertilisation failure in standard IVF. ICSI addresses this by injecting a single selected sperm directly into the egg, significantly improving outcomes in male factor cases.

Number of Previous Cycles

Your first IVF cycle also gives your medical team information. How did your ovaries respond? How many eggs were retrieved? How many fertilised? How did the embryos develop? Each cycle, even one that does not result in pregnancy, helps your doctor refine the protocol for the next attempt. Many couples who do not succeed in cycle one go on to conceive in cycle two or three with adjusted protocols.

The Clinic and Laboratory Quality

This is often underestimated. The culture conditions in the embryology laboratory, the experience of the embryologists, the stimulation protocols used, and the skill of the clinician performing the transfer all have a measurable impact on outcomes. Choosing a clinic with a genuine track record, not just a headline number, matters.

Reduce the Risk of Inherited Genetic Disorders

If you or your partner carries hereditary conditions such as thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia, or other genetic disorders, advanced PGT-M testing can help prevent passing these conditions to your child while allowing you to have a healthy biological pregnancy.

IVF Success Rate on First Cycle

Roughly 40% to 50% of women under 35 conceive on their first IVF cycle at a quality centre. For older patients, that figure is lower.

What this means practically is that a first cycle not resulting in pregnancy is not unusual or a sign that IVF will not work for you. It is part of the process for many couples. Frozen embryos from the first cycle can be transferred in subsequent attempts, and each transfer gives another genuine chance.

The cumulative success rate across multiple attempts is significantly higher than any single-cycle figure. Across three cycles, many couples who are good candidates for IVF will have achieved a successful pregnancy.

Frozen Embryo Transfer Success Rates

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) is when embryos stored from a previous retrieval are thawed and transferred in a prepared cycle. FET has become increasingly common and, in many cases, produces success rates comparable to fresh transfers.

At Delhi IVF, FET success rates are in the range of 35% to 45% per transfer for good-quality frozen embryos, depending on age and embryo grade. The advantage of FET is that the body is not under the hormonal stress of stimulation during the transfer, which can create a more receptive uterine environment.

IVF with Donor Eggs: Success Rates

For women with very low ovarian reserve, premature ovarian failure, or significantly diminished egg quality, IVF using donor eggs offers substantially higher success rates than using the patient's own eggs.

Donor egg IVF success rates at Delhi IVF are in the range of 50% to 65% per cycle, because the eggs come from younger, thoroughly screened donors. The pregnancy is carried by the intended mother, and the baby is biologically connected to the partner providing sperm.

For women over 40 in particular, donor egg IVF often represents the most realistic path to a successful pregnancy.

How to Improve Your IVF Success Rate

There are things within your control that genuinely influence outcomes.

Maintain a healthy weight: Both underweight and overweight statuses affect hormone levels and ovarian response. A BMI between 19 and 30 is associated with better IVF outcomes.

Stop smoking: Smoking reduces ovarian reserve and egg quality measurably. It also affects sperm DNA integrity. Stopping at least three months before a cycle makes a real difference.

Limit alcohol: There is no established safe level of alcohol during IVF treatment. Reducing or stopping consumption during your cycle is advisable.

Manage stress where possible: Stress does not directly cause IVF failure, but chronic stress affects cortisol and other hormones. Light activity, adequate sleep, and emotional support all contribute to a better physical state going into treatment.

Follow your protocol carefully: Injections need to be taken at consistent times. Monitoring appointments matter. The stimulation phase is not the time to miss doses or skip scans.

Ask questions: Understanding what is happening at each stage of your cycle helps you participate meaningfully in your own care rather than just feeling like something is being done to you.

Why Comparing IVF Success Rates Between Clinics is Difficult

You may see clinics advertising success rates of 70% or higher. Before drawing any conclusions, consider the following.

Are they reporting positive blood tests or live births? A clinical pregnancy rate and a live birth rate are not the same figure. Are they selecting only the easiest cases, or treating a full range of patients, including those with complex diagnoses? What age group does the quoted rate apply to?

At Delhi IVF, we treat patients across all age groups and diagnoses, including many who have had previous failed cycles elsewhere. Our outcomes reflect a full clinical picture, not a cherry-picked subset.

When you come for a consultation, your doctor will give you a personalised success estimate based on your specific test results, age, and diagnosis. That number is far more useful to you than any generic figure on a website.

Why Delhi IVF is the right choice for you

Delhi IVF and Fertility Research Centre has been delivering results in fertility care since 1993. Led by Dr. Anoop Gupta, we helped bring Delhi's first IVF baby into the world and have since supported over 25,000 families across India and 66 other countries. Our embryology laboratory operates to the highest standards, and our clinical team has the depth of experience to adapt protocols when standard approaches need refinement.

We do not overpromise. We do not give you a number that is designed to make you feel good in the consultation room. We give you the real picture, along with a clear plan to give you the best possible chance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IVF success rate in Delhi?

At quality fertility centres in Delhi, IVF success rates per cycle range from 40% to 50% for women under 35, 30% to 40% for women aged 35 to 37, 20% to 30% for women aged 38 to 40, and 10% to 20% for women over 40. These are clinical pregnancy rates per fresh cycle. Live birth rates are somewhat lower and vary by individual patient.

What is the IVF success rate on the first cycle?

For women under 35 at a well-equipped clinic, approximately 40% to 50% conceive on the first cycle. Success rates are lower for older patients. A first cycle that does not result in pregnancy does not mean IVF will not work. Many couples conceive in subsequent cycles using frozen embryos from the same retrieval.

Does age affect IVF success rate?

Yes, significantly. Egg quality declines with age, which affects fertilisation, embryo development, and implantation. Women under 35 have the highest success rates. After 37, rates begin to decline more noticeably. For women over 40, donor egg IVF often offers a better chance of success than using their own eggs.

What IVF success rate should I expect with donor eggs?

Donor egg IVF at Delhi IVF achieves success rates of approximately 50% to 65% per cycle. This is higher than own-egg IVF in most age groups because donor eggs come from younger, screened donors. The pregnancy is carried by the intended mother.

What is the difference between the pregnancy rate and live birth rate in IVF?

Pregnancy rate measures confirmed pregnancies, either by a positive blood test or a heartbeat on ultrasound. The live birth rate measures how many of those pregnancies resulted in a baby being born. Live birth rate is always lower because it accounts for miscarriages and other pregnancy losses. When evaluating a clinic's success figures, live birth rate is the most meaningful number.

How can I improve my IVF success rate?

Maintaining a healthy weight, stopping smoking, limiting alcohol, following your medication protocol accurately, and attending all monitoring appointments are the main controllable factors. Your doctor at Delhi IVF will also review your previous test results and cycle history to refine your protocol and maximise your individual chances.

Is the IVF success rate higher at some clinics than others?

Yes. Laboratory quality, embryology expertise, stimulation protocols, and clinical experience all affect outcomes. Success rates also depend on what a clinic counts as "success." When comparing clinics, ask specifically about live birth rates and what patient population the figures are based on.
